Malaysia Continues to Groom Data Professionals

  • Data professionals need to be prepared to take on Artificial Intelligence

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 OCTOBER 2018 – Big Data Week Kuala Lumpur 2018 once again featured its anchor event - ‘Next Big Tech Asia’ – a two-day big data conference, held on 2nd October and 3rd October, at Connexion Conference & Event Center, Bangsar South focussing on the area of Big Data Analytic (BDA), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) related matters focusing on Manufacturing/SME, Public Sector and Banking with speakers and panelist coming all over the world.

More than 500 people attended the Next Big Tech Asia (NBTA) 2018 in conjunction with the annual celebration of Big Data Week Kuala Lumpur. Big Data Week connects a number of major city hubs across Europe, Americas, Australia and Pacific Asia through locally hosted meetups, events, networking functions, data visualisation demos, debates, discussions, conferences, and hackathons.

During the event, it was announced that Malaysia currently has around 8,000 professionals in big data, and it is on track in achieving the target of 20,000 data professionals by year 2020. In the effort to embrace the fourth industrial revolution, Malaysia now needs to prepare its talent for AI.

“While the effort to nurture more Malaysians to become data scientists continues, we now need to ensure that we equip these talents with the know-how of Artificial Intelligence. While some may say that AI is the future, I say AI is the present; the now. Today we have companies, ranging from various industries, that invest a lot in AI. The role of AI in companies will only grow stronger in the future and we need to prepare our talents for that, now” said Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, CEO of MDEC.

Higher learning institutions such as International Medical University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Henly Business School of University of Reading Malaysia, HELP University, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Teknologi MARA were given token of appreciation at NBTA 2018 for embedding Data Analytics curriculum into non-ICT related degrees in various field like Accounting, Business, Education, Pharmacy, Medical Biotechnology, Dietetics with Nutrition and others.

“Education plays a crucial role in the creation of data professionals and we are glad to witness that a growing number of universities, both public and private, have announced their commitment in cultivating more data professionals through the introduction of a new degree or the creation of relevant compulsory classes,” she further added.
